What are genital warts?

It is viral infection caused by the human papillomavirus. This is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by a virus. Approximately 20 million Americans are currently infected and 6 million people become newly infected each year. Certain types of HPV can cause cervical cancer in women.

How is it spread?

It is usually passed from one person to another through skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sexual activity. It is not necessary to engage in sexual activity to get infected with HPV. Skin-to-skin contact with an infected partner is enough to get the virus. HPV can be passed on between straight and same-sex partners—even when the infected partner has no signs or symptoms.

What is the incubation period before symptoms appear?

One might develop warts any time from several weeks to several months after exposure

What are the signs and symptoms?

Visible skin colored lesion is the most common symptom. Those skin growth that mainly asymptomatic(no symptoms) may cause minor itching, burning, or irritation in the infected area.

It can be a single bump or may appear in clusters that cover large areas. In men, warts can infect the penis, urethra, or anus. In women, tend to effect pubic area, vagina, but also on the cervix or anus.

Who should get checked for genital warts?

All sexually active people of both genders should be checked annually

How is the diagnosis established?

The diagnosis for genital HPV varies for men and women. Since the main sign for HPV in men is visible skin growth, the visual exam (sometimes with a magnifying glass) of the skin of the genitals and anus is necessary.Females should get yearly PAP smear by gynecologist in addition to visual examination.

What treatment options are available?

Multiple treatment options are available: from waiting for the body to fight off the virus (might take 2 years) to prescription medicine (can be applied at home) to procedure.

Procedure is necessary for people who want to get rid of the visible lesions fast with more predictable results.

Different types of procedures exist: cryotherapy (freezing), chemical burning, surgical removal, and electrotherapy. All procedures considered minor and done in the office with no downtime.

Where treatment option does your clinic offer?

We offer two types of treatment for removal of genital warts: Freezing (liquid nitrogen) and applying Trichloroacetic acid . It is either a cold air (freezing) or a chemical application (Trichloroacetic acid) that burn the warts off. Both types of treatment are very effective with minimal discomfort, that can be performed the same day. It will take 1 week for the visible lesions to disappear.

Does the person considered free of disease after the treatment?

When the warts disappear, the HPV virus is still might be there, though it may not spread as easily.
